For the Teachers

The ages for this Webquest are aimed for 4th through 6th grade. The goals are to become more culturally aware and to use their creativity and resource skills to create an accurate school day in Japan. In order to begin, students need to be culturally sensitive in order to eliminate unnecisary stereotypes and negative views and students need to be able to use the internet in a productive manner.
In orser to complete this webquest students should be allowed around 3 days of internet research, and at least a week to fully complete the poster requirements.
Since this is a creative webquest, the grading should be based on accurate information gathered not on what they decide for their own characters, that is for their imagination. If the students are able to understand the concept of a Japanese school day, are able to understand what they have chosen as their own topics, and demonstrate that they understand all of the material, then the webquest was successful.

What am I going to do?

As a student, have you ever thought about the differences and similarities there are with other students at your school, in another school? How about in another state? You are going to live the life of a student your own age in a place a little farther, Japan!

To discover a day in the life of a Japanese student you are going to learn about how Japanese children live, go to school, what they eat, and what they do. You are not just going to learn about it though; you are going to live it. Creating your ideal Japanese personality, you will use this to discover another culture from your own view.

The final project with be a poster created by you. On one side is going to be a picture of who you want to be. You are going to decide what kind of child you want to be. What you like to eat what you like, what you dont like, where you live and other pieces of information about your new you. The other side is going to be all about your daily life. Learning about Japanese students’ lives, you will create a day from morning until night and describe what you do during this day, again from the view of a Japanese Student(you).

First Step: Create Yourself

Choose the gender you want to be: Male OR Female

Choose the age you want to be: 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade
*Note* You all need to still be in Elementary school but you get to choose from grade 1-6. This will change how you view your family, your school, and your world. And even though you would be writing from that grades view, you still need to use all the correct grammar that you use now. So even as 1st graders you still use your correct speach, just from a different view.

Next is your name. Scroll down to choose from a long list of Boy's names, Girl's names and names that work for both. Every name has a meaning and choosing a name with a apecific meaning might help you shape who you want to become.

Who are you?

Now that you have all the information of who you are, now you need to know what kind of person you are.
Are you an athlete?
Will you like Karate or Kendo(martial arts with bamboo swords)?
Will you like Soccer or Baseball or Basketball?
Are you a musician?
Are you someone who loves more traditional things like tea ceremonies or flower aranging or oragami?
Are you an Otaku[obsessed with anime, manga, and cosplay (cartoons, comics, and costuming)] or a gamer?
Choose what you want to like and write it down.

Answer the following questions on your own paper(remember, everything you write down needs to be put on your poster later so keep it organized):
1. What after school club you want to join?
http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/meet/shinanodai/index.html
*go here and click "after school" to learn a little about elementary programs after school.
There are clubs of all topics so even if it isn't listed on the website, you can pick any subject; science for example or manga drawing (cominc book making) and say you are now apart of that club.
Once you have chosen, make an example of the club for your poster. If it is an art club draw a picture or glue on paint brushed or clay. If it is the cooking club, glue a spoon or an empty bag of sugar. Use your imagination!

2. What do you eat?
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2035.html
*Go here and find a dish you find interesting and click on (more information). Then write about your new favorite food. What is it made of, how it tastes(imagine), anything you can find. Make sure to print or draw the picture of your favorite food so you will be able to use it in your poster.

3. Where do you live?
The city? Where there are farms and rice patties? In the mountains? You choose!

4. How do you dress?
Choose any style you want.
Some of the more popular looks in Japan right now are

Now that all the information on you is collected and written down, it is time for you to, draw a picture of what you want to look like for your poster. What do you look like? Are you apart of the trends of Japan or are you not? Draw yourself and then put it on your poster so that everone can see who the new "you" is.

The back of the poster

This is a very bad example of what I want you to do.
In this poster there is a schedual and yes you wake up do those things and go to bed, but what I want are details.
Why do you walk to school if you do?
Who do you walk with? Friends? By yourself?
What is your favorite class?

This poster is where you can show all that you have discovered online and share your creativity with it. Draw and explain and talk about what happens in your classes and afterwards. We know you are not really there, but that is the point of this project, to pretend you are there.

In order to find out about the culture of an Elementary student in Japan, you are going to have to do some research.

This website is all about getting to school.
Here is also a link on a little information on the classes.
Need information about students and friends?
This website talks even more about After School Clubs.
Now, without copying Kentaro, here is another example of a day for a elementary school student.

Dont forget to write everything down so you can put it on your poster later.

Presenting

Once you have created yourself, found out all the information on the Elementary School students lives, and then created your own, it is time to present.

Still speaking like you really experienced this day, share with the class who you are and what you do. Then, when you feel that everyone understands who you are, flip the poster around and begin to describe your day as a Japanese Student!
